1. minor withdrawal symptoms (CNS hyperactivity)
a. timing: within 6hr; if no pregress -> cessation in 24-48hr
b. symptoms: insomnia, anxiety ; palpitation, diaphoresis, tremor ; GI upset, anorexia
2. alcoholic hallucination
a. timing: within 12-24 hr ; cessation in 24-48hr
b. symptoms: most common -> visual (VH)
c. DDx: alcoholic hallucination v.s DT => timing! / sensorium! (global clouding?)
3. withdrawal seizure
a. timing: 12-48hr
b. symptoms: generalized tonic-clonic ; single or short period!
4. Delirium Tremens (DT)
a. timing: at least 24hr ; typical 48 -96 hr
b. "syndrome":
agitation, disorientation, hallucination <- ie: consciousness /mental status ;
tachycardia, hypertension, fever, diaphoresis, hyperventilation <- ie: T/P/R/BP
# autonomic instability!
# respiratory alkalosis -> cerebral blood flow decreased! # hypovolemia
c. "lab data": hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia
d. clinical importance: "Mortality"~5%
